The Facilitators (2021)

The Facilitators, Guajardo’s reworking of Christian themes, specifically women in the Bible, depicts in a contemporary style an important role that Catholic religion have had in the life of the artist. While growing up, the artist’s mother constantly told her that there were no better life instructions than the bible, which contain detailed timeless and universal stories of what could go wrong if a person behaves poorly and that those rules apply to any person no matter their religion, nor their nationality.

By portraying women in the bible, the artist references the Old Master’s and the subjects of their studies. Using the same color palette in this series composed of 5 paintings, the artist makes a strong reference to the strength, and at the same time the vulnerability of today’s women. The Facilitators honors the main role each woman played in Christianity which can be compared to the daily sacrifices, doubts, and mistakes of a mother, a professional worker, a wife, and a leader in today’s contemporary life.
